Upper Arley to The Engine House – A Riverside Walk with a Steam Train Twist
If you're after a day out that mixes riverside views, steam trains and a pub stop, this one’s a winner—especially with kids in tow.

🚶‍♂️ The Walk
Start off in the cute little village of Upper Arley. There’s an all-day car park that only costs £2 (cash only!). From there, head off on a lovely riverside walk through the Severn Valley. It’s about 3 miles, mostly flat and packed with gorgeous views of the river and countryside. There's some lovely spots for a pitstop picnic and paddle spots along the way too.

🏛️ The Engine House
When you reach Highley you can go into The Engine House train museum. It’s free to enter and full of old steam trains, hands-on exhibits and railway history complete with a cafe and play area. Proper fun for both train-obsessed kids and adults who love a bit of nostalgia. It's only open certain days though so check ahead before setting out!

🚂 Hop on the Steam Train
Instead of walking back, jump on one of the heritage steam trains that’ll take you right back to Upper Arley. It’s such a lovely way to finish the walk because we all know kids just would not wanna walk all the way back! Sometimes kids travel for just £1, so keep an eye out for that, especially in half term!

🍽️ Pub Stop at The Harbour Inn
Once you're back, The Harbour Inn has a large beer garden with a play area and football goals for the kids.

📌 Good to Know:

  • Parking: £2 all day in Upper Arley

  • Walk Length: Around 3 miles one way

  • Train Tickets: Check ahead for prices and offers

  • Toilets & Food: Available at The Engine House and the pub

This one’s got a bit of everything—walking, exploring, steam trains and a pint at the end. What more do you need?
