Morteratsch Glacier is one of the most impressive glaciers in the Swiss Alps, stretching from the Bernina massif down toward the valley. It’s easily accessible from Pontresina, making it a popular spot for both casual visitors and hikers. Walking along the marked trail, you can see the glacier up close, explore the moraine landscape, and enjoy stunning views of the surrounding peaks. It’s perfect for photography, a nature walk, or simply marveling at the power of the Alps.

Who it's recommended for: Nature lovers, photographers, families, hikers, and anyone fascinated by glaciers and alpine landscapes

Best Season to Visit:

  • Late Spring to Early Autumn (May–October): Trails are clear, weather is mild, and glacier views are stunning

  • Winter (December–March): Snow covers the glacier; possible visit to the ice caves; good for winter photography

How to Get There:

  • By Car: Drive to Morteratsch parking near Bernina Pass or the Morteratsch railway station

  • By Public Transport: Train to Morteratsch station on the Bernina line

Trail / Hike Info:

  • Trail: Morteratsch Glacier Trail (easy, well-marked)

  • Distance: ~6 km round trip (from Morteratsch station to glacier viewpoint and back)

  • Elevation Gain: ~150 m

  • Time: ~2 hours round trip

  • Difficulty: Easy (T1) — suitable for families (stroller-friendly)

Equipment Required: Comfortable walking shoes, water, jacket (weather can change quickly)

Accessibility: Very accessible; mostly flat, well-maintained paths

Tips & Recommendations:

  • Take the trail to the glacier tongue for the best close-up photos

  • Combine with a visit to the Bernina Express train route

  • Only visit the ice caves in winter or early spring when it’s cold enough. Always check the conditions beforehand, and if you hear or notice anything unusual inside the cave, leave immediately!

  • Check glacier conditions; the tongue can retreat during warmer years

  • Stay overnight in Bovalhütte (perfect option for capturing the glacier during sunrise/sunset)
