Papakōlea Green Sand Beach on the Big Island of Hawaii is a unique and stunning spot with sand that's actually green! The beach gets its color from olivine, a mineral found in the volcanic rocks surrounding the area. Getting there involves a 4x4 vehicle or a hike, but the views and experience are totally worth it. Just remember, it's illegal to take sand from the beach, so enjoy the beauty and leave only footprints behind!

TRAVEL TIPS:

• Weather: It can be very sunny or cloudy, so the earlier you arrive the better. We love arriving around 9 am.

• Transportation: If you don't have a 4x4 vehicle, you can pay a local $20 for a ride in the back of their truck to drive you in with a group of other people, and pick you up. You can also walk in, but it's long and inconvenient.

• What to bring: Water, snacks, or pack a lunch as there are few places to stop.

• What to wear: Comfortable walking/hiking shoes, flip flops, light wind breaker/jacket, umbrella for unexpected rain, swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, bug spray.

• Phone Service: There's little to no phone service during the drive once you pass Captain Cook, and especially once you arrive.

• Bathrooms: No bathrooms or showers available.

• Parking: Limited parking spots. Make sure to hide your valuables and lock you car.

• Photography: Cameras are allowed.

• Disability Accessibility: None.
