What to pack for your trip (essentials only!)

Packing for Finland can be a bit tricky because the weather changes quickly, but you don’t need to bring everything you own. Here’s what I recommend to make your trip comfortable and stress-free:

🧥Clothing & Layers

Autumn & Winter (Sep–Mar)

  • Warm jacket or insulated coat. Make sure it has a hood, because snow and wind are no joke here. If you don’t own proper winter clothes, don’t stres, most can be bought locally, and in Lapland, you can even rent full winter gear.

  • Thermal or wool socks. Wearing two layers inside boots keeps your toes extra warm.

  • Gloves or mittens. I personally swear by mittens; they’re way warmer than gloves.

  • Wool beanie & scarf.

  • Snow boots + waterproof shoes. Ankle-high is best so snow doesn’t get inside; grip is essential on icy streets.

  • Layering pieces: long sleeves, sweaters, base layers. Merino wool is your best friend here: it wicks moisture, keeps you warm, and even if you get a little wet, it won’t leave you freezing.

  • Reflector. One of the most important things for winter clothing. Days can be short and dark, so wearing something reflective keeps you visible when walking or cycling. You can easily buy these here in Finland, and they’re a small thing that makes a big difference for safety, especially if you’re out exploring in the evenings.

Spring & summer (Apr–Aug)

  • Light jacket or rainproof layer. Even in summer it can rain or get windy, so always bring a jacket or hoodie.

  • T-shirts, long-sleeves for layering. Finnish summer is nice but a little unpredictable.

  • Comfortable shoes + sandals. You’ll be walking a lot, so comfort is everything. Plus, we have plenty of cobblestone streets, so flat shoes are always your best friend here.

  • Long pants for nature adventures. Ticks exist here, and while snakes are rare, it’s better to be safe when exploring forests or meadows.

🩳 Other important things to pack

  • Mosquito repelent. Seriously, mosquitoes in summer can be relentless, especially in Lapland.

  • Sunglasses. Even in winter! Sun reflecting off snow can be surprisingly strong.

  • Lib balm and hand lotion. Winter air is brutally dry, and even spring and autumn can leave your skin rough.

  • Portable battery. Cold drains phone batteries faster.

  • Umbrella. Mostly for autumn, but summer showers happen too.

  • Reusable water bottle. Tap water is clean everywhere so you don't need to buy plastic bottles.

  • Swimwear. For lakes, the sea, or public saunas.

  • Inside slippers or shoes. If you’re not used to walking around inside just in socks, bring something comfy. In Finland, it’s customary to take your shoes off indoors, so having a pair of slippers or cozy indoor shoes can make it more comfortable.

  • Reusable shopping bag. Most stores charge for plastic bags, so a foldable bag is super handy.

  • Headlamp or flashlight. Especially if you’re traveling in winter, when the days are super short in the north.

  • Earplugs or sleep mask. Summer nights can be super bright, with sunrise around 4 am already. And if you’re up north, it doesn’t get dark at all! Plus, the summer birds start chirping early, so if you actually want a solid night’s sleep, these are a must.
