Wadi Bani Awf is often described as the most technical and adventurous road in Oman - and that’s not an exaggeration.
The road is steep, rocky, and narrow. It's a demanding drive, but also one of the most scenic routes in the entire country! I actually had a lot of fun driving this road. The views are incredible, and the sense of progression as you work your way through the valley makes it feel more rewarding than stressful.
Expect:
Tight switchbacks
Long, steep downhill stretches (when coming from the Jebel Misht direction)
Loose gravel and uneven surfaces
Drop-offs and narrow sections without guardrails
No mobile reception in part
This is a serious stretch, but manageable if driven carefully. I had no off-roading experience before this trip, and I did it fine. Just take your time and don’t rush. Drive in manual 1st gear for steep descents, and avoid overheating your brakes.
