Hjörleifshöfði is a historical promontory located in South-Iceland. Standing 221 meters high, it towers majestically above the black glacial volcanic outwash, Mýrdalssandur. It is named after the Viking settler Hjörleifur Hróðmarsson, the blood brother of Ingólfur Arnarson who is considered to be Iceland’s first Viking settler in around 874 AD. The hike up to the highest peak of Hjörleifshöfði will reward you with breathtaking views of Mýrdalsjökull glacier, the sea, and Reynisdrangar cliffs by the village Vík. When at the highest peak, you can pay your respects at the burial mound of Hjörleifur Hróðmarsson, and also visit the unique family plot built in 1899. Also, you can explore the ruins of the old farms of the former inhabitants of Hjörleifshöfði before finally signing your name in the guestbook located on top. With a rich history, stunning landscapes, and exciting hikes, visiting Hjörleifshöfði will be an experience filled with adventure and beauty!
