This was and is our favorite museum on the entirety of Route 66, which is saying something! And for good reason! This museum is home to so much history and is the perfect place to stop in to get recommendations for the entirety of the road in Illinois. From nostalgic photographs to exciting events and volunteer opportunities, they're dedicated to keeping the spirit of classic Americana alive along the Mother Road. With a Route 66 Museum, Hall of Fame, and passionate members working to preserve this historic highway, this is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the charm and nostalgia of Route 66 in Illinois!
There's something near and dear to us in this museum, Bob Waldmire's VW Bus! Bob Waldmire was an American artist, traveler, and Route 66 enthusiast known for his detailed, hand-drawn maps and artwork celebrating the historic highway. A free-spirited nomad, he traveled extensively in his modified Volkswagen microbus and an old school bus, living a minimalist, eco-friendly lifestyle. His work became iconic among Route 66 fans, and he was the inspiration for the character Fillmore, the hippie VW bus, in Pixar’s Cars. Waldmire passed away in 2009, leaving behind a legacy of artwork and advocacy for preserving Route 66.
