Hidden deep in the foggy highlands of Terceira, the wreckage of a Portuguese Air Force Aviocar aircraft lies scattered in the wilderness — a haunting and little-known memorial to a tragic event. On July 21, 2000, a CASA C-212 Aviocar crashed during a training flight due to low visibility and adverse weather conditions near the summit of Serra de Santa Bárbara. All seven crew members on board tragically lost their lives. The debris field remains untouched, slowly being reclaimed by moss and nature.

Why Visit:

  • One of the island’s most mysterious and emotionally charged locations

  • A hidden, raw experience for adventure seekers and history lovers

  • Rare opportunity to encounter a preserved military wreck in complete isolation

Hike Details:

  • The route to the crash site is just about 4 km round trip, but should not be underestimated

  • There is no official trail — hikers follow a faint and muddy path from near the Serra de Santa Bárbara radar station

  • Extremely challenging terrain: expect knee-deep mud, thick underbrush, and continuous up-and-down relief

  • GPS navigation is essential; visibility can drop suddenly due to fog

What to Expect:

If you do decide to take on this adventure, make sure you have at least 2.5 to 3 hours available, and come prepared for wet, muddy conditions, with thick vegetation and constant changes in elevation. You will be knee-deep in mud, scrambling through bushes, sometimes unsure if you’re still on the path. Visibility can drop to zero when the fog rolls in.

“I was sure I could do it in an hour — but the trail’s condition made this one of the most grueling hikes I’ve ever done. It was a real adventure, yes, but also the kind that tests your patience, endurance, and tolerance for discomfort. Definitely not for everyone.”

⚠️ Important Notes:

  • Do not attempt this hike if the peak is covered in clouds — visibility is critical.

  • Bring GPS navigation, waterproof hiking boots, and long pants.

  • If you’re up for the challenge, you can use my personal GPS track to avoid getting lost.

  • Because the hike is not permitted, not maintained, and not recognized, it should only be attempted by experienced hikers comfortable with conditions, navigation, and potential hazards.

Insider Tip:

Only attempt this trail if you’re already visiting Serra de Santa Bárbara and the skies are perfectly clear. From almost anywhere on the island, you can see if the summit is clouded. If it is — don’t go.
