Parque Saavedra is my special place, a park I lived on or near for 14 of my 15 years in Argentina. It's where I walked my dog and where I took my kids to play. It is Saavedra's living room, if you want to see locals in their natural habitat, as in - you love to people watch, then you'll love Parque Saavedra on a sunny weekend afternoon.
If it's summer, plenty (usually retirees) will be sunbathing for hours. Groups of friends come to have a picnic with either mate or liters of beer or both. Exercise classes abound all over the park - tai chi, yoga, dance, and even juggling. Some Saturdays you might catch a jazz band performing on the grass, because why not? There is a bocce ball court where old men chat the day away and sometimes they have folk music dancing in the evenings.
For the families - There are five different playgrounds and a carrousel. You can keep your kids entertained for hours and spend just a few bucks. In the afternoons they set up activities around the carousel like painting on easels and even a bouncy house on weekends.
Restaurants - In recent years the area surrounding the park has become a major gastronomic hub. My favorites are Manteca Negra (vegan sandwiches & salads), Tay Tay Empanadas and La Epica Pizza (which just re-opened in a new location, a historic bakery).
