The Temple of the Emerald Buddha, located in Bangkok, Thailand, is an important historic Buddhist temple complex. This grand and elegant structure was erected under the patronage of King Rama I in 1783, to enshrine the Emerald Buddha for which it was named. Beyond the fascinating Emerald Buddha statue housed within, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha also features many ornate pieces and buildings. Altogether, they make up an impressive structure. The Ordination Hall (Ubosot) particularly stands out for its golden row of 112 Garudas decorating its marble base. Its tri-tiered roof is a sign of royal patronage while intricate kanok designs cover the building’s exterior walls. Murals of the Ramakien line the outer walls of the temple complex, providing viewers with incredible works of art depicting the story of Prince Rama, a Vishnu avatar. An awe-inspiring sight, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha is a captivating destination worth visiting.
