Dettifoss is a powerful waterfall located in Vatnajökull National Park in Northeast Iceland. Known as the second most powerful waterfall in Europe after the Rhine Falls, Dettifoss boasts a width of 100 meters and a drop of 44 meters into the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon. With an average water flow of 193 m³/s, this majestic waterfall is a popular stop on the Diamond Circle tourist route, offering visitors stunning views and a glimpse of Iceland's natural beauty at its finest. Both entrance and parking are free.

  • Access: The waterfall is accessible via two main roads: Road 864 on the east side and Road 862 on the west side.

  • Seasonal closures: Road 864 is a gravel road that is closed in winter. Road 862 is paved but also not maintained in winter, typically from January to early April.

  • Hiking: Hiking trails are available, including a path that leads to the nearby Selfoss waterfall. Be prepared for slippery conditions near the water's edge.

  • Visitor tips: Bring waterproof clothing, as the spray can be intense. Good hiking boots are recommended
