HOKKAIDO, Japan

Hokkaido is a paradise for hot spring lovers, offering everything from luxurious resorts to wild, natural baths. The island’s geothermal activity and stunning landscapes create ideal settings for relaxation. Noboribetsu Onsen is Hokkaido’s most famous, known for its mineral-rich waters and dramatic Hell Valley. Jozankei Onsen, just outside Sapporo, is perfect for a quick escape into nature. Lake Toya Onsen offers tranquil lakeside views, while Sounkyo Onsen immerses you in canyon scenery and waterfalls. For something quieter, try Asahidake Onsen in the mountains or Fukiage Onsen, a free, rustic outdoor bath. If you’re heading south, Yunokawa Onsen near Hakodate offers seaside soaks and historic charm. Whether you seek snowy serenity or lush summer greenery, Hokkaido’s onsen towns offer a rejuvenating experience all year round.

Here are some of my favourites!

Sounkyo Onsen

Gorgeous canyon scenery, dramatic cliffs, waterfalls (Ginga & Ryusei), ropeways for mountain views. Nice mix of nature + onsen

Asahidake Onsen

Quiet, more nature / hiking oriented. Perfect if you want to combine onsen + adventure (mountains, snow). Less commercial.

Yunokawa Onsen

Very historic, easy access if you’re going to / from Hakodate. Nice water profile, good base + city + onsen combo.

Lake Shikotsu Hot Springs

Beautiful lake surroundings, open-air baths with sulfur water; great for snow scenery or just relaxing in nature.

Noboribetsu Onsen

Probably the most famous. Has many kinds of springs (sulfur, iron, etc.), has the dramatic Hell Valley (Jigokudani) where steam vents, boiling ponds etc. Make sure to explore around the area!

Lake Toya (Toyako Onsen)

Loved for its views ” lake + volcano + relaxing water. Great if you want scenery + chill

Jozankei Onsen

Very convenient, especially if you are staying in Sapporo. Beautiful in autumn (fall foliage), has good hotels, ryokan, outdoor baths, walking around nature.
