Heian-Jingu Shrine in Kyoto is an impressive cultural icon, boasting a giant torii gate which proudly marks the entrance of the shrine. Its history dates back to 1895 and is dedicated to the first and last emperors who reigned from the city, Emperor Kammu (737-806) and Emperor Komei (1831-1867). Heian-Jingu Shrine's grand Torii gate stands tall at 24 meters high, creating an inspiring sight for both local and international visitors alike. The shrine itself has beautiful gardens located behind the main building, where gorgeous cherry trees bloom at the tail end of spring, around mid-April, providing an amazingly picturesque setting. Throughout the year, the shrine holds various festivals and events to entertain its visitors, such as the Jidai Festival on October 22nd, which includes a parade of people dressed in costumes from different eras of Japanese history. Heian-Jingu Shrine is definitely worth visiting for anyone hoping to immerse themselves in Japanese culture.
