Hole in the Wall, located in Mgxotyeni, South Africa is a majestic natural wonder steeped in fascinating legend. Standing at over 200 feet tall and stretching out almost 1,000 feet long, the cliff contains a stunning archway that has been sculpted by Indian Ocean waves. It is known as ‘esiKhaleni’, which means Place of Sound, and local Bomvana folklore states that it is home to the mythical semi-aquatic sea-people. According to legend, the archway was created when the sea-people carved a hole into the rock with the help of a giant fish in order to gain access to a beautiful girl’s landlocked lagoon where they reached eternal happiness. It is a place of mystery and beauty that visitors can enjoy hiking to or viewing from high bluffs.
