Best time to visit May–June and September–October are the sweet spots. Weather is perfect, crowds are manageable, and prices are 30–40% lower than July–August. Summer is stunning but can feel overwhelming at famous beaches.
Getting around Rent a car — full stop. Public transport exists but is slow and won't get you to the best beaches. Book in advance for summer. Some coastal roads are narrow and winding — drive carefully. Keep your tank above half in rural areas, gas stations are sparse inland.
Booking beaches Several beaches now require advance reservations to protect the ecosystem: La Pelosa, Cala Goloritzé, Cala Brandinchi, and Punta Molentis. Don't show up without booking in peak season — you'll be turned away.
Where to stay Cagliari and Alghero are the best bases for first-timers. For beach lovers: San Teodoro (northeast), Villasimius (southeast), Cala Gonone (east). For something boutique and local: Oliena (Barbagia), Bosa (west coast).
What to eat Culurgiones (potato-filled pasta from Ogliastra), fregola con arselle (pasta with clams), porceddu (roasted suckling pig), bottarga (cured tuna roe), sebadas (honey-fried cheese pastry). Drink Vermentino (crisp white) and Cannonau (earthy red from Barbagia).
Local secret Avoid eating lunch and dinner in the most touristy harbor areas — walk 2–3 streets inland and prices halve while quality doubles. Sardinians eat late: lunch at 1:30–2pm, dinner rarely before 8pm.
Offline maps Download offline maps on Google Maps before heading to the coast and mountains — signal drops in remote areas. The Rexby guide works offline too.
Packing essentials Water shoes (many beaches are rocky), reef-safe sunscreen (protected marine areas enforce this), cash (many smaller beaches, agriturismi, and villages are cash-only), a reusable water bottle (tap water is safe almost everywhere).
Respect the nature Taking sand, pebbles, or shells from Sardinian beaches is illegal and carries fines up to €3,000. The beaches stay pristine because locals take this seriously — so should every visitor.
Book ahead Boat trips on the Gulf of Orosei fill weeks in advance in July–August. Hotels in Costa Smeralda and Villasimius sell out months early. For a summer trip, plan at least 2–3 months ahead.
