Do You Need a Car in Lake Tahoe?
Yes — having a car makes exploring the lake much easier.

If you want to truly enjoy Lake Tahoe, you need a car. The lake is large, and the best beaches, hiking trails, viewpoints, and towns on both the north and south shores are spread out. Without a car, you’ll miss a lot of what makes Tahoe special.
Public transportation has improved in recent years. Services like TART (Tahoe Transportation District) and LakeLink now connect several towns and popular spots, and there’s also the Emerald Bay shuttle during the busy season. These options make it easier to get around without driving, but they still can’t reach many of the most beautiful beaches or more remote trails.
You can use Uber or Lyft, but rides can get expensive if you’re traveling long distances across the lake. They’re great for short trips, like going out for dinner or if you’ve been drinking, but not ideal for a full day of exploring.
Car rentals are available at nearby airports like Reno-Tahoe International Airport or Sacramento International Airport, and also at several locations in South Lake Tahoe and Truckee. Renting locally can save time if you’re already in the area, but booking early in summer is recommended since cars can be in high demand.
Quick tips:
Renting a car gives you the flexibility to explore multiple areas in a single day.
Plan ahead for parking at popular beaches and trailheads, especially in summer.
Even if you rely on shuttles or rideshares occasionally, having a car lets you chase sunsets, visit hidden coves, and see more of what Lake Tahoe has to offer.
In short, a car isn’t just convenient — it’s basically required if you want to experience the lake fully.
