How Cold Is Lake Tahoe?
Yes, Lake Tahoe is cold in summer, but a swim is still refreshing!

One of the most common questions people ask before visiting Lake Tahoe is how cold the water really is. The short answer is that it stays cool year-round, even during summer.
Because Lake Tahoe is deep and sits at a high elevation, the water warms slowly. In summer, surface temperatures usually range from the low 60s to low 70s (°F), with late July through September being the warmest window. Early summer and mornings tend to feel much colder.
That said, swimming in Lake Tahoe can feel surprisingly refreshing in summer. The sun is strong at elevation, the air is dry, and temperatures can get hot during the day, so a cold dip often feels great, especially in the afternoon.
Swimming is best done near the shoreline, particularly at beaches and protected coves. These areas warm up slightly more and stay calmer than open water. This is not a lake where you want to swim far out. Long-distance or open-water swimming should only be done by experienced swimmers with proper gear.
A few helpful tips before getting in:
Expect the cold to hit fast when you first enter the water.
Shallow coves feel warmer than areas with quick drop-offs.
Calm, sunny afternoons are usually the most comfortable time to swim.
Water shoes can help with cold feet and rocky entry points.
If you are paddleboarding or kayaking, consider a wetsuit early or late in the season.
Knowing what to expect makes a big difference, whether you are planning a quick dip, floating near shore, or cooling off after a hot, sunny beach day.
