Everything you need to know about access rules, parking, and how not to get a ticket!
Alpe di Siusi might look like a peaceful dream, but showing up without knowing the access rules can quickly turn into an expensive one. A lot of people get fined here every year simply because they didn’t know how the system works. So here’s what you need to know before you go:
You can't just drive up whenever you want
From 9 am to 5 pm, the road from Siusi to Compaccio / Kompatsch (the main village on the plateau) is closed to private cars. If you try to drive up during those hours, you risk a fine.
However, you can drive up before 9 am. Just make sure to pay for parking once you reach the top, then leave your car in one of the marked parking areas. From there, you can walk straight to the scenic viewpoints and enjoy the early morning light before the crowds arrive.
The only way to access the road during restricted hours is if you have a hotel booking on the plateau. In that case, your reservation gives you access to drive up, if you can afford it and have time, I think it is a great option!
The cable car saves the day (again)
If you're visiting for the day, the easiest and most scenic way up is by cable car, either from Siusi or Ortisei. Both routes bring you straight onto the plateau and save you the hassle of driving. There is parking available at the base stations, and tickets can be bought on site or online!
Other options
You can also take a bus from Castelrotto / Ortisei OR hike up if you are feeling adventurous :) The trails are beautiful and well marked, but be ready for a steady climb.
