Lake Braies is now unanimously considered the most beautiful lake in the Dolomites. Its emerald green waters and unspoiled nature surrounding it make it a heavenly place that attracts tourists from all over the world. I remember the days when I rocked up to the lake with my camera and had little to no people around me. Lake Braies is easily reached, but due to overtourism, many restrictions have been imposed in recent years during peak season. On the other hand, it is such a special place that it should be preserved as much as possible from the large masses of tourists. These days, the lake is jam-packed, even at sunrise, you will find yourself amongst other early bird photographers. However, I think everyone who visits the Dolomites has to see this iconic location. There is a good reason why it has gained so much popularity, and riding the boats on the lake is a lot of fun!
From July 10 to September 10, the road to Lago di Braies is closed to private traffic from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM. If you want to park near the lake during that time, you’ll need to book your spot online in advance. Otherwise, you can visit before 9:30 AM or after 4:00 PM without a reservation.
During the closure, you can also reach the lake using shuttle buses from Dobbiaco, Villabassa or Monguelfo. Online booking is required.
