Oniyama Hotel

This was the perfect base for exploring Beppu’s famous steam district and onsen area around Kannawa.

The hotel has a much more traditional onsen atmosphere compared to standard hotels in Japan, and staying here honestly felt like being fully immersed in the geothermal side of Kyushu. Steam rises throughout the surrounding streets and the area becomes especially atmospheric once the sun goes down.

The location is also really convenient and within walking distance of the steam streets, geothermal cooking spots and several of Beppu’s famous Hells.

Helpful tips:

  • Great option if you want a more traditional ryokan-style stay in Beppu

  • Walkable to the Hells

  • Easy to explore Kannawa on foot from here

  • Onsens in Japan can feel extremely hot at first so ease yourself in slowly

  • Many stays here include traditional Japanese breakfast and dinner options

  • Cooler weather makes the steam throughout the area look even more dramatic

This stay honestly added so much to our overall Beppu experience and made it easy to slow down and really enjoy this part of Kyushu.
