We stayed here while exploring Takachiho Gorge and honestly loved how peaceful this whole area felt compared to Japan’s bigger tourist destinations.
Guest House Iwato is a simple local-style stay located close to some of Takachiho’s main sights, including the gorge and nearby shrines. If you’re road tripping through Kyushu, this area works really well as an overnight stop and gives you the chance to experience a much quieter and more rural side of Japan.
One of the biggest advantages of staying nearby is being able to visit Takachiho Gorge earlier in the morning before the crowds arrive.
Helpful tips:
Best explored by car as public transport is limited in this area
Great base for visiting Takachiho Gorge early
Convenience stores and restaurants are more limited here compared to bigger cities
Nights become very quiet so plan dinner ahead
Easy stop between Beppu, Mount Aso and Kagoshima if you’re road tripping Kyushu
Takachiho honestly ended up feeling like one of the most unique regions we visited in Japan and staying locally here made the experience feel even more special.
