Nara Deer Park is one of those places that feels completely surreal the first time you visit — hundreds of free-roaming deer casually wandering between temples, paths, and snack stalls like they own the place (because honestly… they kind of do). Entry to the park itself is free, so you can explore at your own pace, but the real fun starts when you grab a pack of shika senbei (deer crackers) from the local vendors. They’re only a few hundred yen and the deer instantly recognise them, expect polite bows, curious nudges, and a lot of personality.
Things to know before you go:
• Entry to Nara Deer Park is free
• Deer crackers (shika senbei) are sold by vendors around the park for a few hundred yen
• Keep crackers hidden until you’re ready to feed them — the deer will follow you if they see food
• Hold onto maps, bags and loose clothing (they love to nibble)
• Mornings are usually calmer and less crowded
• Easy to combine with Todaiji Temple and nearby gardens for a half-day visit
It’s a little chaotic, very funny, and one of the most uniquely “Japan” experiences, just go in with a sense of humour.
