The UBS Polybahn is a short funicular railway linking Central Square with the ETH Zurich’s Polyterrasse viewpoint. In service since 1889 and modernised over time, it remains a beloved piece of Zurich’s transport heritage and a quick way to scale the steep hill.
The ride lasts just under 2 minutes and departs every 2–5 minutes during operating hours (Monday–Friday 6:30–21:00; Saturday 7:30–21:00; Sunday 9:00–21:00).
Prices: A single-ride ticket costs CHF 1.20 at the machine, or you can use any valid city transit pass (zone 110) without extra charge.
The lower station is a short walk from Zurich HB and is also served by trams at Central, while the upper station drops you near ETH and the university.
The funicular’s bright red carriages carry up to 50 passengers and run driverless on a cable system. Additionally, the Polybahn is fully integrated into daily commuting – you’ll often ride alongside students and professors – but tourists are welcome and even have a virtual ride option online.
Note that the Polybahn is not wheelchair accessible due to steps at the stations. At the top, riders can step out onto the Polyterrasse, enjoying panoramic views of the city’s rooftops, river, and distant mountains. Furthermore, the area connects to the university quarter and a short walk leads to cafes and the ETH main building. Riding the Polybahn is a small delight: inexpensive, efficient, and nostalgically charming as it trundles up the hillside that would otherwise demand a 10-minute climb.
