The 5 Lakes Trail – 5-Seenweg – is Zermatt’s classic panorama hike, a 9.3 km loop showcasing five mountain lakes at various altitudes. Each lake offers a different perspective of the Matterhorn reflected in its waters.
You’ll start by taking a funicular and gondola up to Blauherd (2571 m). From there, the well-marked footpath leads to Stellisee, the first and most famous lake: on calm mornings its mirror-like surface perfectly doubles the Matterhorn’s image. Next comes Grindjisee, nestled among larch trees, then the larger Grünsee (whose green hue lives up to its name), followed by tiny Moosjisee with milky turquoise glacial waters. The final lake, Leisee at Sunnegga, features a picnic area, playground, and a fun wooden raft – great for families to relax while kids splash around.
Prices: A Sunnegga–Blauherd lift ticket costs about CHF 65 round-trip (half-price with Swiss Half-Fare Card). Alternatively, buy a single to Blauherd (~CHF 59 summer) and hike down. Activity Level: Moderate. It’s mostly downhill (↓686 m) over 9 km, taking ~3 hours walking time. Some sections are uneven or gravelly, but the trail is rated easy-to-moderate for fit walkers (many families do it).
Getting There: From Zermatt, ride the Sunnegga funicular (5 min) then the Blauherd gondola (additional 5 min). Begin hiking from Blauherd station. Return via Sunnegga funicular from Leisee/Sunnegga at hike’s end. Seasonality: Summer only – generally late June through early October, when snow has melted from the paths. The lakes are at ~2,500 m, so snow can linger till mid-summer.
Practical tips: Start early (before 10 am) for the best chance of calm lakes and fewer crowds – Stellisee’s reflection is most reliable in morning stillness. Carry water and sunscreen; the trail is quite exposed with limited shade. Sturdy shoes are recommended as some downhill parts are a bit steep or rocky. Pack a picnic or stop at Restaurant Sunnegga at trail’s end.
