Before You Hit The Albanian Riviera
The small things that make the Albania coast trip smoother, slower, and way more enjoyable

The Coast, Albania
The No-Brainer:
Rent a car from Tirana Airport upon arrival.
Go in May If You Can
If you want the Riviera at its best without the peak summer chaos, May is honestly ideal.
You’ll still get:
beautiful turquoise water,
sunny beach days,
open restaurants and beach spots,
and comfortable temperatures.
But with:
fewer crowds,
easier parking,
quieter beaches,
and a much calmer driving experience.
Don’t Underestimate Drive Times
The Albanian Riviera looks small on the map… until you start driving it.
Mountain roads, curves, beach stops, traffic, and random viewpoints will slow you down constantly. Plan fewer stops per day and enjoy the drive itself.
Base Yourself Instead of Hotel-Hopping
One of the best decisions of this trip was staying:
2 nights in Vlora
2 nights in Sarandë
2 nights in Ksamil
It made the trip feel relaxed instead of rushed.
The Drive Is An Experience
Especially:
Llogara Pass
Dhërmi coastal roads
Himarë surroundings
Some of the best moments happen between destinations, not necessarily at them.
Beaches Look Better Earlier
In summer, beaches get crowded quickly. Try to:
arrive early in the morning,
stay through sunset,
or enjoy slower mornings and beach-hop later in the day.
Parking Can Get Chaotic
Especially in:
Ksamil
Sarandë
Dhërmi in peak summer
Smaller cars help A LOT on Riviera roads.
Download Maps Offline
Signal can get weak along parts of the coast and mountain roads.
Offline Google Maps genuinely helps here.
