The Algarve Playbook
What I learned from living on the road, chasing sunsets, and exploring Portugal's wildest coastline

Van Life Changes Everything
If you're considering a van trip, do it. The freedom to wake up near the ocean, adjust your route based on weather, and stay longer in places you unexpectedly love completely transforms the Algarve experience.
Use Campsites Even If You're Sleeping in a Van
One of my best decisions was regularly stopping at camping grounds. Some are paid, some are free or very affordable, and they provide access to showers, washrooms, electricity, and a safer overnight environment. It makes life on the road significantly easier.
Base Yourself When You Can. Plan Your Move Along The Coast
The Algarve may look small on the map, but you'll spend more time exploring and less time packing if you choose strategic bases and take day trips from there. A few well-chosen stays beat constantly moving around. But if you're moving down the coast day by day, locate your camping sites and wild spots to plan it right.
Spring Is the Algarve's Best-Kept Secret
April and May offer the sweet spot: pleasant temperatures, blooming landscapes, easier parking, lower accommodation prices, and significantly fewer crowds. You'll enjoy the coastline without feeling like you're sharing it with half of Europe.
Pack Layers, Even in Good Weather
Sunny doesn't always mean warm. Coastal winds can be surprisingly strong, especially during sunset, on cliff walks, and along the western coast. A light jacket or extra layer often becomes your most-used item.
The Best Views Require a Short Walk
Some of the Algarve's most spectacular spots aren't visible from the parking lot. Bring comfortable walking shoes and don't hesitate to follow coastal trails, you'll often find viewpoints and beaches most visitors never see.
Build Your Days Around Golden Hour
Sunrise and sunset completely change the landscape. Early mornings bring empty beaches and calm conditions, while evenings paint the cliffs and coastline in incredible colors.
The Magic Can Be Between the Famous Stops
Yes, visit the iconic beaches and viewpoints. But some of my favorite memories came from unnamed coves, roadside viewpoints, quiet fishing villages, and random detours I discovered along the way.
Stay Flexible With Your Daily Plans
Some beaches will make you stay longer. Some viewpoints deserve a second visit at sunset. Some days the wind will push you elsewhere. The Algarve rewards travelers who leave room for spontaneity.
Slow Down and Enjoy the Evenings
After a day of driving, hiking, and exploring, there's nothing better than settling into a seaside town, grabbing fresh seafood, watching the sunset, and letting the day unfold naturally. Don't rush your evenings here.
