Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area (often called Old Airport Park) is a large shoreline park located just north of Kailua-Kona. Once the site of the town’s original airstrip (closed in the 1970s), it has since been converted into a public recreation area. The long, flat runway now serves as the main access road and parking area, leading to a mix of rugged lava shoreline, sandy beach areas, tidepools, and expansive grassy fields. The park is a local favorite for picnics, fishing, walking, and watching Kona’s famous sunsets.

TRAVEL TIPS:

  • Weather: Kailua-Kona is hot and dry most of the year. Afternoons are sunny and warm, with occasional clouds and breezes.

  • Pack a Day Bag: Sunscreen, hat, water, picnic supplies, and sturdy shoes if you want to walk along the rocky shoreline.

  • What to Wear: Casual clothing, swimsuit if you plan to wade or snorkel, sandals or water shoes for exploring lava rock and tidepools.

  • What to Bring: Picnic or BBQ supplies, camera for sunset photography, and snorkel gear if conditions are calm.

  • Phone Service: Strong cell reception throughout the park.

  • Bathrooms: Public restrooms and outdoor showers are available near the main parking areas.

  • Parking: Ample free parking along the old runway and near pavilions.

  • Check-In Booth: None—entry is free.

  • Photography: Excellent for sunset photos, shoreline seascapes, and local park life.

  • Accessible for Disability: Yes—the paved former runway makes it easy to access picnic areas and restrooms, though the shoreline is rocky in most places.

Old Airport Park – History and Cultural Significance

  1. From Runway to Recreation
The area was originally Kailua-Kona’s first airport, built in the 1940s. After the opening of the larger Kona International Airport in 1970, the site was transformed into a public park.

  1. Local Gathering Place
For decades, Old Airport Park has been a hub for local community life. Families gather here for birthday parties, weekend picnics, hula practices, and sporting events on the large grassy fields.

  1. Natural Shoreline
Though not a prime swimming beach, the shoreline features tidepools, small sandy stretches, and lava rock ledges. Locals often fish along the coast, and snorkelers can explore near the southern end when waters are calm.

  1. Cultural and Recreational Events
The park frequently hosts community festivals, canoe regattas, and cultural gatherings, continuing its role as a central meeting place for Kona residents.

  1. Old Airport Park Today
    Today, visitors enjoy:

    • Wide open lawns and picnic pavilions

    • Walking paths and tidepool exploring

    • Beautiful, less-crowded sunset views over the ocean

It remains a special spot where local life, community traditions, and Kona’s natural beauty come together.
