Old Porvoo is one of Finland’s most charming small towns and a must-visit if you’re near Helsinki.
This historic area is famous for its cobblestone streets, colorful wooden houses, and riverside vibe. It’s small enough to explore on foot.
HOW TO GET THERE: Getting to Porvoo is super easy by bus from Helsinki. It’s about a 50-minute ride, and there are plenty of departures every day from Helsinki Bus Station (yep, that’s in the basement of Kamppi Shopping Center). You can grab your ticket online in advance for around $10, and when you get to Porvoo, the bus station is right in a central shopping area, only about a 5-minute walk to Old Porvoo.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Old Porvoo is beautiful year-round, but summer is my personal favorite. The whole old town wakes up, cafés open their doors, flowers are blooming, and the colorful wooden houses look insanely photogenic in the sunshine. Perfect for photos, exploring, and slow wandering.
THINGS TO DO
Porvoo has many great cafes, one of my favorites is Porvoon Paahtimo, a combination coffee shop, roastery, and bar housed in a former warehouse.
Brunberg Chocolate Shop: taste some handmade chocolate or pick up a sweet souvenir; it’s a local favorite. Brunberg also has a factory outlet just outside the town center, where you can find larger selections, seasonal treats, and sometimes discounted goodies. It’s perfect if you want to stock up or bring back gifts for friends and family.
J. L. Runeberg's Home: the original home of Finland's national poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg.
Riverside stroll: walk along the Porvoo river for great views and photo opportunities.
