Leave No Trace

As you explore our little slice of heaven in The Desert Southwest, it's essential to be mindful and adopt a mindset of environmental stewardship. Our pristine wilderness deserves our respect and care, and one way to ensure its preservation is by adhering to the Leave No Trace principles. Let's jump into these principles and how to be a best steward of the land in protecting not only these irreplaceable resources, but also, my home.

1. Plan Ahead & Prepare
   Know the rules before you go. Desert heat, flash floods, and limited water sources can turn small mistakes into emergencies. Carry extra water, sun protection, and maps since cell service is often unreliable.

2. Travel & Camp on Durable Surfaces
   In the desert, the ground isn’t just dirt—it’s living cryptobiotic soil, a fragile crust that prevents erosion and grows life. One footprint can destroy decades of growth. Always stick to marked trails, slickrock, or dry washes, and set up camp only in established sites.

3. Dispose of Waste Properly
   Pack out all trash, food scraps, and toilet paper. For human waste, use a WAG bag or dig a small cat hole at least 6 inches deep and far from water sources. Remember: water is scarce here—keep it clean.

4. Leave What You Find
   Desert plants, rocks, and cultural artifacts are part of the story of this place. Taking them harms ecosystems and erases history. Snap a photo instead and leave everything as you found it.

5. Minimize Campfire Impact
   Wildfire risk is high in the desert. Fire bans are common—when in doubt, skip the flames. Use a camp stove or a propane fire ring instead of burning wood. If fires are allowed, keep them small and in established rings only.

6. Respect Wildlife
   Desert animals are masters of survival. Don’t feed them, and keep your distance—your snacks and attention can throw off their delicate balance. Observe quietly with binoculars or a camera lens.

7. Be Considerate of Others
   These wide-open spaces are prized for their silence and solitude. Keep noise down, yield the trail, and give others room to soak in the desert’s peace.
