Airport Considerations for the Southwest
Flying into Southern Utah isn’t always straightforward
Hello Mallory
Utah, United States
Flying into Southern Utah isn’t always straightforward. The closest airports are small, and the big ones often mean a road trip. Here are the main hubs, plus smaller regional airports that might work depending on your route.
Major Airports to Consider:
Las Vegas (LAS)
Pros: Often the cheapest flights; lots of rental car options; ~2.5 hours to St. George, ~3 hours to Zion.
Cons: Longer drives to parks outside Zion (5–7+ hours to Moab or Arches).
Salt Lake City (SLC)
Pros: Good flight availability; ~4 hours to Moab, ~4.5 hours to Bryce, ~5 hours to Zion; scenic drive south.
Cons: Still a long drive to most Southern Utah destinations.
Phoenix (PHX)
Pros: Major hub with lots of flight options; ~4.5 hours to Page, ~7 hours to Zion; good for combining Arizona + Utah trips.
Cons: Long drives to most Southern Utah parks; heat in summer makes road trips tougher.
Albuquerque (ABQ)
Pros: Often cheaper than Phoenix; good option if you're combining Monument Valley, Page, or Four Corners with a Southern Utah road trip; ~5 hours to Page, ~6 hours to Zion, ~4 hours to Mesa Verde.
Cons: Still a long drive to most Utah national parks; fewer direct flights than larger hubs like LAS or PHX.
Regional / Smaller Airports
St. George (SGU)
Pros: Closest commercial airport to Zion (~1 hour); small and easy to navigate.
Cons: Limited flights (usually through Delta/Salt Lake or American/Phoenix); higher fares.
Cedar City (CDC)
Pros: Very close to Cedar Breaks, Kolob Canyons, and Bryce (~1 hour).
Cons: Very limited flights, usually routed through Salt Lake.
Grand Junction, CO (GJT)
Pros: Good option if you’re focusing on Arches, Canyonlands, or Colorado’s Western Slope; ~2 hours to Moab.
Cons: Not ideal for Zion/Bryce; limited direct flights.
Quick Takeaways: Best Airports by Park
Zion → Fly into Las Vegas (LAS) for best flights + rentals.
Bryce Canyon → Las Vegas (LAS) is the most affordable; Cedar City (CDC) if you want closer.
Capitol Reef → Salt Lake City (SLC) is most reliable; Grand Junction (GJT) works if visiting Moab, too
Arches → Grand Junction (GJT) is best best balance, but Salt Lake City (SLC) will likely be cheapest; Moab (CNY) if you want closest.
Canyonlands → Grand Junction (GJT) is best best balance, but Salt Lake City (SLC) will likely be cheapest; Moab (CNY) if you want closest.
Grand Canyon → Phoenix (PHX) has best flight deals and cheapest; Flagstaff (FLG) if you want closer.
If you plan on visiting all five of Utah’s parks, Salt Lake City (SLC) and Las Vegas (LAS) will be most affordable. You can consider flying into Vegas and leave from Salt Lake (or vice versa) if your time is limited.
