After-Hours Brews & Bites: Dublin’s Best Late-Night Cafés
Dublin’s Late-Café Survival Guide – Where to Find Coffee Past 4pm
Kylie Kinsella
Dublin, Ireland
Dublin might be full of cozy cafés by day, but finding one open past 4 or 5pm can feel like a scavenger hunt. While the city’s pub culture thrives at night, those craving a quiet corner for late-night coffee, dessert, or laptop work often hit a wall of "Closed" signs. But don’t despair—hidden among the early-shuttering spots are a few gems that keep the espresso flowing and the treats coming well into the evening.
Whether you’re a night owl, a remote worker burning the midnight oil, or just someone who believes cake tastes better after sunset, here’s your short but mighty list of Dublin’s best late-night cafés.
Mind the Step
Tucked away on Strand Street Great just off the Millennium Walkway, Mind The Step is a true hidden gem that has mastered the art of the late-night coffee. Open until 11:00 PM from Monday to Saturday, it offers a warm, community-focused atmosphere with comfortable seating and warm lighting that invites you to linger. Coffee lovers rave about the quality brews, but the real showstopper is their unique hot chocolate, served with a chunk of frozen chocolate on a spoon for you to stir in. They also offer a tempting selection of pastries, sausage rolls (including veggie and vegan options), and toasties. Adding to its quirky charm, the cafe also houses a dance studio upstairs, with Tango lessons and Milonga on Wednesdays and Fridays. Do note their laptop policy: allowed during the week but restricted after 5 PM and on weekends, encouraging a more social, chatty vibe.
The Music Café
Situated right on Wellington Quay in Temple Bar, The Music Café is a charming little spot with a prime view of the River Liffey and Grattan Bridge. It's one of those rare cafes that stays open later than most, making it perfect for evening people-watching while enjoying a quality coffee, a pastry, or a sandwich. True to its name, the cafe hosts regular live music gigs on its tiny stage upstairs, including weekly blues and jazz sessions that add a layer of magic to your evening. With a strict no-laptop policy, the focus here is on conversation and soaking in the atmosphere, though be prepared for limited seating as it's a popular spot.
The Tea Garden
For those who prefer a pot of something soothing over an espresso, The Tea Garden is an absolute must-visit. This tranquil oasis in the city centre is open until 11:00 PM every night, offering an incredibly peaceful and relaxed atmosphere that feels a world away from Dublin's hustle and bustle. With dim lighting, deep armchairs, and multiple cosy rooms, it's the perfect place for deep conversation or quiet contemplation. Their tea menu is extensive, featuring varieties from around the world, and their Masala Chai comes highly recommended by regulars. They also serve delicious cakes and, for some, offer shisha.
Beanhive
Located on bustling Dawson Street, Beanhive is a small but mighty cafe that packs a big personality. While it closes at 6:00 PM, it earns its place on this list for being an essential stop for any evening out in the city centre before the later hours kick in. Famous for its incredible latte art—watch the barista create intricate scenes right in the front window—the coffee is some of the best in the city. The food, though simple, is described as outstanding by visitors, and the tiny, homey space somehow feels welcoming rather than cramped.
Two Fifty Square
For those venturing a bit outside the immediate city centre, Two Fifty Square Coffee Roasters in Rathmines is a destination worth the trip. Located in Williams Park on Rathmines Road Lower, this spot is a favourite among locals for its dedication to quality coffee. It operates with standard cafe hours (closing at 6:00 PM), making it an ideal late-afternoon stop for coffee enthusiasts exploring the southside.
Recanto
A more recent addition to Dublin's late-night scene, Recanto on Talbot Street brings a taste of Brazil to the city. Open until 8:00 PM seven days a week, and from as early as 6:00 AM on weekdays, it's a haven for both early birds and night owls. The name translates to "nook" in Portuguese, and it truly feels like a cosy corner for delicious, affordable Brazilian treats. Indulge in traditional cakes, pudim (Brazilian flan), savoury snacks like chicken tarts, or even a Brazilian hot dog, with most items reasonably priced.
Il Valentino
Nestled on Cows Lane in the Temple Bar area, Il Valentino is a bakery and café that has been a local fixture for years. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, it's a reliable spot for freshly baked scones, pastries, sandwiches, and sweet treats. While recent reviews note a change in atmosphere following a takeover, the food remains tasty, and its location and evening hours make it a convenient option for a relaxed bite away from the Temple Bar crowds.
Amir's Delights
Rounding out our list is Amir's Delights, widely regarded as the best shisha cafe in Dublin city centre. This spot offers a wonderfully relaxed and vibrant atmosphere, making it a perfect evening destination for groups of friends. Beyond the shisha, they serve excellent quality coffee, a variety of teas, and delicious Tunisian sweets and pastries. The host is known for being incredibly welcoming, and the calm, laid-back vibe makes it an ideal place to unwind with a book or enjoy good conversation late into the evening.
Because great conversations (and coffee cravings) shouldn’t have a curfew.
