How Not to Do Dublin: The Overrated, Overpriced & Overhyped
A concise guide to Dublin's most common tourist pitfalls and how to discover the city's true charm instead.
Kylie Kinsella
Dublin, Ireland
Dublin is a city brimming with authentic charm, but its most famous spots can sometimes lead to long queues, steep prices, and a diluted experience. To dive deeper into the real Dublin, consider swapping these classic tourist activities for more rewarding alternatives.
Temple Bar Pub
Why it's on the list: Skip the €11 pint (possibly more now) at Temple Bar and discover the countless traditional pubs in adjacent areas like Dame Lane, Stoneybatter or the Liberties, where the craic is just as good but the atmosphere is more local.
Local Alternative: Some of my favourite pubs are the Cobblestone, Mulligan's, the Gravedigger's, The Palace Bar, MV Cill Airne and The Glimmerman.
The Book of Kells
Why it's on the list: While Trinity College and the Book of Kells is iconic, the long shuffle through a crowded exhibit can be underwhelming. The Book of Kells is also currently under restoration works and there are significantly less books in the old library, limiting its impact but interestingly not lessening its price for tickets.
Local Alternative: Instead, admire the college's architecture for free and visit a lesser-known museum like the Chester Beatty for astonishing artefacts.
The Guinness Storehouse
Why it's on the list: It's the #1 paid tourist attraction in Ireland, with an entry fee now often over €30. While the Gravity Bar view is iconic, you're essentially paying a premium for a very slick, self-guided corporate museum that ends with a pint you've already paid for. The pouring lesson can feel rushed and crowded too.
Local Alternative: For a more authentic and historical stout experience, visit the Guinness Open Gate Brewery (the experimental brewery, often with unique taps) or take a tour of the Roe & Co Distillery or Pearse Lyons Distillery in the same area. For a great pint of plain in a historic setting, try The Brazen Head (Dublin's oldest pub) or Mulligan's on Poolbeg Street.
O'Connell Street & The "Historic" Spire
Why it's overrated: While the statues of O'Connell, Parnell, and Joyce are significant, the street itself is often congested and plagued by fast-food chains and generic shops. Making a special trip to see them is unnecessary; you'll pass through naturally. The Spire, as mentioned, is literally a shiny pin—a modern landmark with zero engagement.
Local Alternative: For powerful public art and sculpture, visit the Famine Memorial on the Custom House Quay or wander the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) grounds at Kilmainham.
Bambino's Pizza
Why it's on the list: Bypass the endless queue for a slice at Bambino’s—so overrated in my opinion—Dublin’s exciting food scene offers too many options when it comes to pizza and without the wait in neighbourhoods like Smithfield or Portobello. If you're dying to try Bambino's pizza, they have another location near Merrion Square that rarely has queues.
Local Alternative: For seasonal, wood-fired perfection with an unburnt crust, La Strada is a masterclass. For a uniquely delicious and affordable thick-crusted fix, grab a €5 Detroit-style slice at DOOM Pizza. When a late-night, foldable New York-style slice calls, Di Fontaine's delivers iconic bulk. For consistently excellent, no-fuss pizza with premium toppings, trust the reliable craft of Sano Pizza. Each offers a distinct, crowd-free taste of Dublin's pizza scene.
Buying a "Claddagh Ring" from a Chain Jeweller
Why it's overrated: Purchasing this iconic symbol of love, loyalty, and friendship from a generic high-street jeweller strips it of all meaning. You're buying a mass-produced piece often made abroad.
Local Alternative: Buy from a traditional, family-run jeweller in Galway (its city of origin) or, in Dublin, from a respected Irish designer/goldsmith like R & C McCormack Celtic Jewellers or Rhinestone for a unique, quality piece with a real story.
