How to get here- You have three options, both starting in Karakol.

1. Hike

  • By mashrutka #101: Depart Karakol via public transport to the valley entrance (~10 SOM), then pay the 250 SOM park entry fee.

  • The trek takes 3–4 days round-trip, following a well-blazed trail all the way to Karakol Peak. Expect the last ~2 hours to traverse unmarked terrain above the glacier basin.

  • Coordinates: 42.4866° N, 78.4081° E (trailhead)

2. Hybrid (Jeep)

  • Hire a Soviet-era 4×4 truck to reach campsites deep in the valley—about 8,000 SOM one-way per vehicle.

  • Self-driving is not permitted on the narrow final stretch, and many rental vehicles aren’t high-clearance enough. These heavily modified trucks are required to navigate river crossings and rugged terrain.

3. Horse Trek

  • Guided 2–3-day horseback rides typically start from Karakol or the valley park entrance. These include camping, meals, and horse support.

Where to stay here- Most trekkers bring all of their own camping gear. That being said, there is one yurt camp in the valley open during the summertime. (See other pin for more camp details)

What to do here- Karakol Valley is one of Kyrgyzstan’s most underrated alpine treks—offering serene landscapes, glaciers, and mountain peaks. The hike itself is moderately challenging but supremely rewarding with dramatic views and minimal crowds.
