Honestly, in my opinion, this is the most beautiful lake on the North Island. You can really feel how untouched and pristine this place is, thanks to the effort it takes to get there. The journey involves long, windy gravel roads, and you’ll lose reception, so make sure to download a map before you head out.

From the Waikaremoana Holiday Park, follow the gravel road, and just after you cross a one-lane bridge over a creek, the first carpark will be on your left. It’s hard to miss, but it’s only about 5 minutes from the holiday park. From there, lace up your hiking boots and follow the signs to Lake Waikaretit. It’s about 3.5 kilometers to the start of the lake, and the trail isn’t too difficult, though there’s a slight incline.

When you reach the lake, you’ll find an information hut and a wooden lookout point with amazing views over the water. Take your time, snap some pics, and then set up wherever feels right to you, there’s white sand here, making it look like a crystal-clear beach. The best part? It’s freshwater, so no need to worry about salty hair or marine life. The water is super refreshing, and just being in such a serene place feels incredibly healing.
