The 4-Bus Network Cheat Sheet: How to Navigate Madeira Car-Free đđșïž
The 4-Bus Network Cheat Sheet

Madeira, Portugal
Alright, letâs solve the biggest headache people face when trying to explore Madeira without a rental car. If you open Google Maps and try to plan a bus route across the island, your brain will probably melt.
In the past, Madeira had a fragmented mess of four completely separate bus companies. The island recently rolled out a unified public transit network called SIGA.
While everything is slowly being rebranded to SIGA, the island's routes are still divided into geographic zones operated by three partner fleets. To make sure you don't miss your ride, here is your dead-simple cheat sheet to mastering the new network.
The Golden Rule: One System, Three Zones đșïž
The entire island is now under the SIGA banner. However, depending on where you want to go, you'll be boarding buses managed by three core operators:
1. HorĂĄrios do Funchal / HF (The Urban & Central Peaks)
The Vibe: They handle Funchal's city center and the central mountain ridges.
Where They Go: If you are traveling entirely within the capital, youâll hop on their bright yellow urban buses. They also handle the interurban mountain routes heading up to Ribeiro Frio, Santana, and high up to the peaks like the Poiso stop.
How to Pay: For city buses, buy a reloadable Giro card at any gray kiosk downtown before you board (itâs way cheaper than buying single tickets from the driver). For country routes, you can pay cash on board.
2. SIGA Rodoeste (The Rugged West Coast)
The Vibe: The western half of the island network.
Where They Go: If you want to head out to the fishing village of CĂąmara de Lobos, check out the massive cliffs at Cabo GirĂŁo, or head all the way out to the volcanic pools in Porto Moniz and the sunny beaches of Calheta, look for the Rodoeste-operated SIGA lines.
How to Pay: Dead simpleâjust board the bus, tell the driver where youâre going, and pay with cash.
3. CAM - Companhia de Autocarros da Madeira (The Airport & East Coast)
The Vibe: This operator absorbed the old "SAM" and "EACL" lines to cover the entire eastern tail of the island.
Where They Go: This is the fleet that runs the Aerobus (the direct shuttle from the airport into Funchal). They also run the commuter routes to Caniço, Machico (for that golden sand beach), and Caniçal (where the Whale Museum is).
How to Pay: For the regular commuter routes, pay the driver in cash. For the Aerobus, you can buy your ticket at the airport arrival gate or directly from the driver.
3 Friend-to-Friend Survival Tips for the Bus đșïžâš
Download the Moovit App! đ±: Seriously, do this before you even leave your hotel. While standard Google Maps gets totally confused by Madeiraâs layout, Moovit handles the SIGA transit network beautifully. It tracks the stops in real-time so you know exactly when to pull the cord and hop off.
The "Wave or Miss It" Rule: Bus stops on the island are request stops. If you see a SIGA bus approaching, don't just stand thereâhold your arm out and wave aggressively to the driver, or they will fly right past you.
Prepare for the "Rollercoaster" Effect: Madeiran bus drivers are absolute legends. They navigate massive, vertical, winding mountain roads in giant vehicles with total ease. If you get motion sickness easily, grab a seat near the front, look straight ahead, and maybe skip the heavy breakfast!
đĄ Pro-Tip: Grab a GIRO Card Right Away!
Whatever you do, donât pay the bus drivers in cash if you can avoid it. As soon as you get into Funchal, pop into a newsagent (tabacaria), a local kiosk, or the main SIGA ticket office down on Avenida do Mar and ask for a paper GIRO card. It costs a literal âŹ0.50 for the physical card, but it lets you load up prepaid trips that work smoothly across the entire new SIGA network.
Using the GIRO card instead of paying cash on board instantly knocks about 25% to 30% off your fares. Instead of fumbling around for a âŹ2.00 or âŹ2.60 cash fare with a driver on a winding mountain road, you just tap and go for âŹ1.45 to âŹ1.95.
Quick heads up: If you are traveling as a pair, you can actually share a basic paper GIRO card! Just tell the driver how many people are traveling before you tap so they can adjust the machine for you.
