Tucked away in the lush, emerald-green mountains of the Santana region, the Ribeiro Frio Trout Farm (Posto Aquícola do Ribeiro Frio) is such a unique and peaceful place to visit. Surrounded by the ancient, misty Laurissilva Forest, this stone-built hatchery is where local trout are raised in fresh mountain spring water that flows right through the grounds.

It is a beautiful, relaxing spot to wander around, check out the different stone pools, and soak in the fresh mountain air. Plus, it sits right at the trailhead for some of the island's best walks, like the famous Balcões viewpoint path, making it a perfect little nature stop on your road trip!

Getting out here using public transport is incredibly easy and saves you dealing with mountain parking:

• Just hop on the SIGA Bus 56 (Route 801) or Bus 103 (Route 802) right from central Funchal.

• Both buses head straight up into the mountains and stop directly at the Ribeiro Frio entrance.
