LeHardy Rapids is a peaceful stop along the Yellowstone River that’s often overlooked by visitors rushing between major attractions. While the rapids themselves are beautiful, this stop is especially known for its wildlife. If you're visiting in late May and early June, you may spot one of Yellowstone’s most unique birds, the harlequin duck. These striking ducks nest along fast-moving mountain rivers and are one of my favorite birds to look for in the park.

In late spring and early summer, LeHardy Rapids is also one of the best places to watch Yellowstone cutthroat trout spawning. You can often see dozens of fish swimming through the shallow water from the boardwalk. These trout play a vital role in Yellowstone’s ecosystem and provide food for bears, river otters, bald eagles, ospreys, and other wildlife.

Family Friendly: Yes. The short, flat boardwalk makes this a quick and easy stop for families. Kids enjoy spotting the spawning trout, and if you’re lucky enough to see a harlequin duck, it’s a memorable wildlife experience that many visitors miss.
