The impressive Shala Valley and River (Lumi i Shalës; Shala Fluß) rises above the mountain village of Thethi, below the steep slopes of the Qafa e Pejës Pass, which leads into Montenegro, in the Albanian Alps. After flowing for just 36 kilometers through a largely untouched ecosystem, the Shala River (42.198881 19.807217) empties into Lake Koman. This place is truly magical, distinguished by the vivid color of its crystal-clear turquoise water, bright gravel banks, and steep, densely vegetated cliffs rising dramatically from the shoreline. The site cannot be reached by car. The most convenient way to get there is by traveling across Lake Koman, whose fjord-like scenery is often regarded as one of the most beautiful boat journeys in Albania.

The journey begins at the 115-meter-high dam, constructed between 1979 and 1988 near the village of Koman as part of socialist Albania’s energy policy. The associated hydroelectric power plant remains an important component of the country's electricity production, supplying much of Albania with energy. From this lively hub, small boats transport people and goods to remote villages that can only be reached by water. In addition to the Drin River, Lake Koman is fed by the Shala and Valbona rivers. The reservoir covers 34 square kilometers and is approximately 400 meters wide. At its narrowest point, the ferry route is no more than 50 meters across.

There are numerous activities available on site. Visitors can hike, kayak, swim in the ice-cold water, relax in the sunshine, or photograph the unique surroundings. Small guesthouses and simple restaurants are scattered along the riverbanks. Plan to spend a full day on this excursion. The best time to visit is between June and September. However, those seeking greater tranquility may prefer May or October.
