Ollantaytambo is one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in Peru and one of the most important logistical hubs in the Sacred Valley.

This is where many travelers board the train to Machu Picchu.

Why it matters in your itinerary:

• Lower elevation than Cusco (~9,000 ft vs. 11,150 ft)

• Ideal place to acclimate before Machu Picchu

• Direct access to the Ollantaytambo train station

• Walkable historic core with preserved Inca streets and water channels

You don’t need many nights here — but where you sleep before Machu Picchu makes a difference.

Some travelers stay in larger Sacred Valley resorts (Rio Sagrado, Tambo del Inka) and transfer to the train. Others choose to spend their final Sacred Valley night in Ollantaytambo itself for convenience and early departures.

Don’t miss:

• The Ollantaytambo ruins (steep but spectacular views)

• Wandering the original Inca street grid

• Small cafés and artisan shops

Strategically, this is one of the smartest bases before Machu Picchu.
