Nizwa Fort was built in the 1650s, though parts of its foundations date back to the 12th century. Construction took around twelve years, and it was designed to protect the city and its surrounding date plantations (which were the region’s primary source of wealth at the time).

From the top, you get panoramic views over Nizwa and the surrounding mountains. The massive circular tower is the highlight of the fort!

Visiting around sunset is especially beautiful.
