Visiting Maria Island was a last-minute decision that we’re SO glad we made. This was one of our favourite places in Tassie!

It’s a no-car island and quite isolated, you get there via a quick ferry from Triabunna.

You can camp overnight and have to bring everything with you so it’s not for everyone, but we absolutely loved it.

Wombats are literally everywhere (even BLONDE wombats!), beaches are icy blue, and there are some truly epic things to do, such as:

  • Visiting the iconic Painted Cliffs (low-tide only)

  • Snorkel out the front of the cliffs (marine sanctuary, big lobsters)

  • Hike Bishop and Clerk

  • Spot Tasmanian devils at night

  • Walk through old convict buildings and ruins

  • Pick wild berries along the trails in season

  • Watch wombats roam around camp, including blonde ones

HOW LONG TO STAY?
1-2 nights is perfect. Long enough to hike, snorkel and properly soak it in.

GETTING THERE & MOVING AROUND

  • Ferry: 30‑minute ferry from Triabunna, about 1.5 hrs from Hobart. Around $50 return.

  • Parking: Leave your car at the ferry terminal overnight. We did it and had no issues.

  • From Hobart: There’s a shuttle bus to Maria Island and back.

  • On the island: No cars. You walk or cycle everywhere. Bikes can be hired but book ahead.

You need a Park Pass to visit the island, this is a separate fee from the ferry, the shuttle, or campsite.

Get tickets to Maria Island (including shuttle from Hobart) on the official site, here!

There are also full-day tours from Hobart and back.

They’re pricier than just getting the shuttle. But you’re paying to travel comfortably plus to be with a tour guide that shows you around the island and tells you all about it.

This can be a massive pro for some people (especially if you can’t stay overnight). Here’s an epic one if you’re keen!

TRAVELLING WITH DOGS
Dogs are not allowed, sadly. Maria Island is a national park and wildlife sanctuary.

ACCOMMODATION
There are no hotels. You either camp or stay in the old penitentiary. Both are basic and you must bring everything!

Here are all the places to stay on the island:
