Prague Travel Tips & Basics
Planning a trip to Prague? Here are some of the most important things to know before you go.

Prague, Czech Republic
Language
The official language is Czech. In tourist areas, hotels, and most restaurants, many people speak English, so it is generally easy to get around. Learning a few words such as “Děkuji” (thank you) is always appreciated.
Currency
The local currency is the Czech Koruna (CZK). Although some places accept euros, you will usually get a better rate when paying in Czech crowns.
Cash or Card
Credit cards and mobile payments are widely accepted, including Apple Pay and Google Pay. It is still useful to carry a small amount of cash for public restrooms, local markets, or smaller shops.
Best Time to Visit
Prague is beautiful year-round, but my favorite times to visit are April–May and September–October. During these months, temperatures are pleasant and the city feels less crowded than in the peak summer season.
How Many Days Do You Need?
I recommend spending at least 4 to 7 days in Prague. This gives you enough time to explore the city at a slower pace and include one or two memorable day trips.
Public Transportation
Prague has an excellent and affordable public transportation system, including trams, buses, and the metro. I recommend downloading the PID Lítačka app to buy tickets and plan your routes.
Airport Transfer
The easiest way to reach the city center from Václav Havel Airport is by taking Bus 59 to Nádraží Veleslavín and connecting to the metro.
Tipping
Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. Leaving around 10% in restaurants is common when service is good.
Water
Tap water is safe to drink throughout Prague, so carrying a reusable water bottle is a great idea.
Electricity
The Czech Republic uses Type C and Type E outlets with 230V electricity. Travelers from the United States and Canada will need a plug adapter.
Safety
Prague is generally considered very safe for travelers. As in any major city, keep an eye on your belongings in crowded areas and be cautious of exchange offices with poor rates.
Time Zone
Prague operates on Central European Time (CET), which is 6 hours ahead of Boston and New York during most of the year.
Best Apps to Download
PID Lítačka – public transportation and tickets
Uber or Bolt – convenient rides around the city
Google Maps – navigation and saved locations
WhatsApp – useful for communicating with hotels and tour operators
My Personal Tip
Start your days early, especially around Charles Bridge and Old Town Square. Prague is one of Europe’s most visited cities, and seeing the main landmarks before the crowds arrive makes the experience much more enjoyable.
