Midnight Pass was a naturally shifting inlet between Siesta Key and Casey Key that opened and closed over time depending on storms and tides. In 1983, it was permanently closed by private landowners, which disrupted the natural water flow between the Gulf and the bay (making it stagnant, brown water that was not safe for wildlife (or humans)).

Today, its beauty comes from that untouched, almost wild feeling. The area has evolved into a quiet stretch of shoreline with tidal pools, shifting sandbars, and a more natural, unspoiled landscape that feels completely different from the more developed beaches nearby.

HERE’S HOW TO ENJOY THIS HIDDEN GEM:

Getting there by kayak or paddleboard:
Head to Turtle Beach and park as far north as possible—this puts you closest to the launch point. From there, paddle about ¾ mile south. You’ll spot a pergola and a condo complex at the end of the waterway—make a sharp right there. Follow the mangroves as they curve around, and you’ll arrive at your destination. Don’t forget sunscreen, cold drinks, and towels—you’ll want them.

Planning a boat day:
Check the tides before you go. The water here is incredibly shallow (which gives it that stunning blue color), but it can be tricky to navigate depending on the tide.

Walking from the beach:
At low tide, you might be able to walk about ¾ mile down from Turtle Beach. That said, this can be hit or miss—private condos and high water levels often make the route difficult.

Best time to visit:
Early morning is our favorite—especially for sunrise. It’s peaceful, less crowded, and you’re more likely to spot wildlife. We’ve seen baby hammerhead sharks, manatees, and even pods of dolphins.

A quick safety note:
The current through the pass is very strong. Swimming here isn’t recommended, as people have been swept out farther than expected.
