‼️⚠️ ONLY PARTIALLY OPEN
(Passable between Encumeada - Folhadal - Caramujo - Bica da Cana)
This spectacular 12 km circular route between Bica da Cana and Casa do Rabaçal is one of the most atmospheric hikes on the island. Expect dense forests, a network of tunnels (headlamp essential!), and levadas lined with moss and ferns. It’s especially magical on cloudy or misty days when the forest feels like something out of a fairytale.
You’ll pass by Levada do Pináculo and Levada do Folhadal, cross several small waterfalls, and enjoy occasional open views of the Ribeira Brava valley when the clouds part. The contrast between lush vegetation and raw mountain cliffs is what makes this trail so memorable.
Good to know:
– The trail is moderate to challenging and includes narrow levada paths and slippery stone steps.
– There are 5 tunnels, some quite long and low – bring a torch/headlamp and mind your head.
– It’s a loop trail, so you’ll return to your starting point without needing a transfer.
– Start early in the day to avoid afternoon clouds and have enough time for breaks and photos.
– Waterproof shoes are recommended – parts of the trail are often wet or muddy, especially after rain.
🕓 Distance: approx. 12 km

Tip:
