Ronny Creek is not only a popular starting point for the challenging Overland Track hike in Tasmania but also the best spot in Cradle Mountain-Lake St. Clair National Park to spot wombats. These adorable marsupials are drawn to the area because of the expansive grassy moorland, with its tufts of button grass providing prime grazing ground. Plus, it’s conveniently located right next to the bus stop, making it super accessible.

Wombats are fascinating creatures with a lot of unique traits. They are nocturnal and mainly herbivorous, feeding on grasses, roots, and bark. They are known for their impressive burrowing skills, which help them stay cool and safe from predators. They have a tough, thick rear end that protects them from attacks and is effective in deterring predators.

Wombats are most active in the early morning and late evening, but I saw about five of them hanging out around 3 p.m. So, if you head out in the afternoon, you’re likely to meet some cuties. When interacting with these wild animals, it’s important to respect their space. Keep a respectable distance and avoid touching them. You must stay on the boardwalk here, which runs above their grazing grounds, so the chance of walking into them is rare.

For capturing the perfect wildlife photos, Ronny Creek is definitely the place to be. The combination of easy access and abundant wombat sightings makes it a top spot for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers.
