🐠 A Day at Pedn Vounder & Nearby Coves

Turquoise water, golden sand, and cliff-top views – this is one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in Cornwall

Cornwall, United Kingdom

Pedn Vounder is a really special beach to me – I try to make at least one trip there every summer. On a good day, it honestly feels like you’ve left the UK entirely! I love combining a day on the beach with a coastal walk and a stop farm + fort!

Here’s everything you need to know if you’re planning to explore this stretch of coast:

🚗 Where to Park

Treen Car Park

  • Easiest access to Pedn Vounder — about 15–20 minutes.

  • A go-to if I want a shorter, direct day trip.

Porthcurno Beach Car Park

  • Great if you want to start at Porthcurno too.

  • Walk east for around 15–20 minutes to reach Pedn.

  • From here, you can continue on to Porthchapel and Porthgwarra for a longer walk.

Porthgwarra Car Park

  • A quieter, tucked-away spot.

  • Around 30–40 minutes west along the coast to Pedn – scenic and peaceful.

  • Perfect if you’re in the mood for a proper coastal walk.

🧗‍♀️ Beach Access

No matter which route you take, the final stretch to Pedn Vounder involves a steep scramble over rocks.

  • Not a proper path, so grippy shoes and care are essential.

  • Most people handle it fine, but it isn’t ideal for everyone.

🌊 Tide Times

Pedn Vounder is best at or around low tide, when the sand is fully exposed.

  • At high tide, the beach is much smaller — you might still see a strip of sand, but it’s not as good for lounging or walking.

  • I usually plan to arrive a couple of hours either side of low tide to make the most of it.

🥪 Food & Drink

Farm + Fort, St Buryan

  • One of my favourite places nearby.

  • Amazing coffee, matcha, pastries, brunch and perfect takeaway sandwiches for the beach.

  • Bonus: on summer Fridays, the Pizza Roja van rolls up with fresh Neapolitan pizza 🍕

Porthgwarra Cove Café

  • A cosy little spot by the cove.

  • Lovely on a longer walk—just check opening times, as it’s seasonal.

🏖️ Beaches to Explore

  • Porthcurno – Easy to get to, ideal for swimming and relaxing.

  • Pedn Vounder – Turquoise waters and golden cliffs — feels like your own secret spot.

  • Porthchapel Beach – A quieter gem, surrounded by cliffs and fewer people.

  • Porthgwarra Cove – Rustic and peaceful, more for wandering than sunbathing, with a lovely café to rest at.

✅ My Quick Tips

  • Arrive early – car parks fill up fast on sunny days.

  • Check tide times and aim for low tide to really enjoy Pedn.

  • Bring water, snacks, sunscreen — there are no facilities at Pedn.

  • Wear grippy shoes, especially for the descent.

  • And always leave no trace — take everything home and help preserve this amazing place.
