The Monastery of Panagia Chrisoskalitissa is situated 72 km south of Chania, near the breathtaking Elafonissi Lagoon. Resembling a grand fortress, it is perched atop a 35-meter-high rock, offering stunning, unobstructed views of the sea.

The monastery’s name, which translates to "Our Lady Gold-Stepped" in Greek, originates from a local tradition regarding one of its 98 steps. According to legend, one of these steps was made of gold, visible only to those with true faith in God. Another version of the story suggests that the golden step was sold by the Patriarchate during the Turkish Era to alleviate the monastery’s financial struggles.

The monastery’s church has two aisles, dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the Holy Trinity. While the exact date of its founding remains unknown, nearby once stood the Monastery of Saint Nicholas (Agios Nikolaos), which operated during the Turkish Period. Additionally, remnants of a small fishing village from the Middle Minoan period have been discovered on the beach adjacent to the monastery.

According to tradition, in 1527, the rebels Georgios and Peter Kantanoleon were buried here, inspiring the work Cretan Weddings by Zambelios.
