Preveli beach
A River Runs Through It

Get ready for a truly unique beach experience where a river flows through a lush palm grove right into the sea. It's a stunning sight, but be prepared for the journey to get there. You'll need to navigate a steep, rocky staircase down to the sand, which takes about 15 minutes. The climb back up is a bit of a workout, but the spectacular views and the chance to swim in the cool river waters make it all worthwhile.

How to access Preveli Beach

By car + walk (most common):
option a) Drive from Rethymno toward Plakias and follow signs for Preveli / Moni Preveli. Park at the main viewpoint above the beach. From there, a steep stairway of about 450 steps leads down to the beach (15–20 minutes). The climb back up is demanding—bring water and good shoes. Great vue

option B) Drive from Rethymno toward Plakias and on google maps you put "Preveli Crete - Dionyssos Rooms & Restaurant". There is a trail, much easier than the steps of 15 min to access the beach. Offcourse is much more flat and you lose the great vue from uphils

By boat:
Daily excursion boats run from Plakias, Agia Galini, and nearby south-coast ports during the summer. Boats drop you directly at the beach, avoiding the stairs.

By hiking:
For experienced hikers, Preveli can be reached by walking down Preveli Gorge, starting near the old stone bridge. This option combines nature, river crossings, and the beach at the end.

Local tip ⭐
Arrive early or late in the afternoon to avoid crowds. Walk a little upriver and swim in the cool freshwater pools before heading back to the sea.

Eco note 🌿
The palm forest and river ecosystem are protected. Stay on marked paths, do not climb or damage palms, take all waste with you, and avoid using soaps or sunscreens in the river—Preveli’s beauty survives only with care.
