Budapest, Hungary
Budapest is one of those underrated spots in Europe that totally takes you by surprise ā a mix of stunning old-world charm, cool local culture, and super chill vibes. But before you go, here are a few things I wish I knew the first time I went:
š° 1. They donāt use the Euro
Budapest is in Hungary ā and Hungary uses the forint, not the euro. Youāll see prices in HUF, and yeah, the numbers look crazy at first, but donāt stress. Most places take card, but itās smart to keep a bit of cash on you for small shops or market stalls.
š 2. Getting around is super easy
The public transport here is so good. Trams, metros, buses ā all super cheap and super efficient.
š° 3. Itās actually two cities
Yep ā Buda and Pest. Budaās the hilly, quiet, castle-side; Pest is flatter, livelier, and full of bars, cafĆ©s, and energy. Theyāre split by the Danube and connected by gorgeous bridges. Make time for both!
š¦ 4. Donāt skip the baths
Budapest is famous for its thermal baths ā natural hot springs that feel amazing after a long travel day. SzĆ©chenyi is the big, iconic one. GellĆ©rt is more art nouveau and a bit more relaxed. Pro tip: bring flip-flops and a towel, or youāll have to rent 'em.
š£ļø 5. Language & manners
Hungarian isnāt the easiest to pick up, but even a little goes a long way. Try ākƶszƶnƶmā (thank you)! People really appreciate it. Also, itās polite to say hello/goodbye when walking into small shops or cafĆ©s ā small gesture, big respect.
š» 6. The ruin bars are a vibe
These are Budapestās signature thing! Bars inside old abandoned buildings, filled with random furniture, fairy lights, and good music. The most famous is Szimpla Kert, but there are plenty more in the Jewish Quarter if you explore a bit.
š” 7. Tippingās a thing
Around 10-15% is the norm. Some restaurants add a service fee, so check your bill first ā no one wants to double tip accidentally.
š 8. Youāll walk a lot
Budapest is super walkable! Honestly, the best stuff is found on foot. Bring comfy shoes and set aside time to just wander. Sunset from Fishermanās Bastion? Unreal!
Quick Bonus Tip:
Spring and autumn are honestly the best times to visit ā great weather, fewer crowds, and still super affordable.
Thatās it ā now youāre set for Budapest! Save this for your trip or send it to someone heading there soon.
