Edinburgh + Bonus: Scotland Road Trip & Glasgow Weekend Getaway, United Kingdom
Whether you're here for the castles, the cosy pubs, or the moody skyline straight out of a fairytale, there are a few things that are super helpful to know before you arrive. From the unpredictable weather to the best ways to get around, here's everything I wish I'd known before my first visit.
Edinburghās weather has a personality of its own. Even in summer, expect a bit of everything: sunshine, mist, rain, windāand sometimes all in one afternoon. Your best bet? Pack layers, a waterproof jacket, and shoes that can handle getting wet.
The city is built on hills, and much of the charm is in the cobbled Old Town streets and hidden staircases. Whether you're climbing up to Edinburgh Castle or wandering down Victoria Street, trust meāyour feet will thank you for choosing comfort over fashion.
Most of the must-see spotsālike the Royal Mile, Princes Street Gardens, Calton Hill, and Holyrood Palaceāare within walking distance. Just keep in mind that "short walk" sometimes means "short but steep" when you're in Edinburgh.
Almost everywhere takes contactless card paymentsāincluding buses, small shops, and cafĆ©s. That said, itās still good to have a little cash on hand for things like tipping or if you're visiting more traditional markets.
Places like Edinburgh Castle, Mary Kingās Close, and The Real Mary Kingās Close often sell out during peak season (especially in August). Book online in advance to avoid long lines or missing out altogether.
Youāre not expected to tip the way you might in the U.S., but if youāve had good service in a restaurant or on a tour, a 5ā10% tip is always appreciated.
The Lothian Buses network covers most of the city and is easy to use. You can tap your contactless card right on the bus or grab a day pass if youāre hopping around a lot. The trams are great for getting to/from the airport too.
Edinburgh is a city best appreciated from above. Hike up Arthurās Seat for sweeping views of the city and coast, or head to Calton Hill for the ultimate golden hour photos. These are perfect for sunrises, sunsets, or just a quiet moment with a view.
Scottish people are some of the friendliest you'll meetādonāt hesitate to ask for directions or a local recommendation. Just be prepared for a dry sense of humour and the occasional thick accent!
If you're visiting in August, you're in for a wild timeāEdinburgh transforms into a festival hub with The Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the largest arts festival in the world. It's a must-see, but also extremely crowded. Accommodation sells out early and prices rise, so plan way ahead if you're coming during this time.
Edinburgh is a city that charms you at every turnāancient, atmospheric, and full of surprises. Knowing these few tips before you go will help you make the most of your time without any unnecessary stress. Whether you're coming for a couple of days or making it part of a longer Scottish adventure, get ready to fall in love with this city.
